Welcome to Britishwords.co.uk where you will find popular British sayings and British slang that are actually heard today in the UK.  I live in London, a lively cosmopolitan city of 7 million people so I’m never short of fresh material!  All the expressions and words on this site have either been heard in conversation with English people or have been given the approval by my English panel!

I’m constantly updating the site so please check back often.

Have a browse through the categories on the right or search for some British words in the search box. And don’t forget to vote for the sayings you’ve heard!

Some of the words or sayings are quite casual slang and not what you would want to say to your boss or on a first date, so I’ve added a formality rating for each one.

Save this for the pub or when with your closest friends.  These sayings could be quite vulgar and perhaps offensive

Casual language for use with friends.  Might be OK for informal office environments but you won’t be joining English High Society any time soon!

Everyday language suitable for use at work.

Quite formal polite language that would be suitable for use in a business presentation or on a first date when trying to be on your best behaviour.

Formal sayings that perhaps the Queen herself would say!
